Thanks for joining me!

My journey with Nikon started with D-90; had it for a long time. Couple of years ago I was tempted with heavily marketed Nikon D810 and along with the product came my buyer’s remorse. For a not so seasoned photographer, learning this camera seemed flustering. Trying to get a good handle on the camera became tedious and the complicated controls made my journey more difficult. My taunting Canon friends did not make it easy either. So for a while I really contemplated switching to one of the 5D-Mark models. As time went on the reality of not wanting to buy a new camera sunk in and I started to put more effort in understanding the D810 better. Then came D850 – I waited for awhile and then I talked to a local camera store. They tempted me with an offer that I couldn’t resist – trading my D810 for D850. After waiting for over 6 months my D850 finally arrived. So I have decided to pen my journey into this blog. Spoiler alert – I couldn’t have been happier with this product.

Unboxing

I was high and proud at the same time; I held the box in my hand and walked around the store (what a show off..) in that thought process I couldn’t wait to go home. As I was unboxing, wife asked why didn’t I try it in the store to make sure everything is OK – I realized I should have done that. Darn, why I didn’t I think of that? She had a point. As I was unboxing I was feeling optimistic, though now am thinking that I may be missing Nikon’s Extended Warranty (I got one with D810.) I will have to check with the store..

First Impressions

This camera got my attention from the get go. Every control is where it should be, within minutes I was using it with ease. Touch screen was intuitive enough to take on quick tasks. When you are in an event, talent is always moving and we get no time to adjust controls and in that respect D810 seemed clumsy (in the hindsight, I could have added shortcut functions though) Whereas with D850, within minutes I was chasing humming birds in the yard.

P.S., opinions are my own.

  1. Congratulations on your new camera. I hope you are getting the most of it. I to know how you felt when you got your camera as I couldn’t even sleep when I got my Canon 7D a few years ago. As you stated once you get the feel for the camera it becomes an extension of your eye and your creativity. I guess for us photographers a camera is our pallet and we capture (paint) what happens in that one moment in time that will probably never repeat itself.
